Buck Antlers Rehearsal + Animation Thursday

On Tuesday I went to the rehearsal of Brun's band 'Buck Antlers' and kind of went crazy with my camera. It was pretty dark in there, had to shoot on 400ISO and a very low shutter speed to get anything on my photos. Next time I want to shoot on 400 or 800ISO T-Max Film, maybe Ilford with my Pentax, see what I can do when I go analogue.

Hi Everyone, just wanted to give you guys a little heads up that it will take me a while to come up with a new update, since I'm working on my site, it's half-way through and will hopefully be ready by the beginning of next week. I might be moving my blog to my site as well, not sure yet, looking over the possibilities, upsides and possible downsides of moving my blog...

The Journal of Samuel Blackburn

I found something that used to belong to her, she had given it to me for my ninth birthday: a small book of fairy tales. Clasped between its pages was a lock of her hair. I miss her, I miss her laugh and the way she used to run bare footed across the grass. She is something that was and then she wasn’t and her not being here fills me with longing for the times when we were young and innocent.

Yesterday, Brun and I went over to Erin's house, to take photos of her, Erin is playing Liv Archer, Samuel Blackburn's childhood love, who drowned when they were little. Because we couldn't make it time-wise, we had to work digitally, and I aged the photo by hand and photoshop. I printed the photo on light-sensitive photo-paper and than started working on it with water and a cloth, I sealed the photo-paper with 'Golden Open Studio Retarder' which stopped the paper from being light-sensitive, the photo is accompanied by an excerpt from The Journal of Samuel Blackburn, one of the earlier entries.

I've had my dolor IV booklet lying around for a week now, but I wanted to wait till they were available for purchase at rotopolpress. Brun and I worked together on this one, I wrote the story and he did the illustrations. Once the summer starts we'll try to have a little comic up each month, about our little freaks and creeps. First one is 'The Adventures of Dead Boy' about a little dead boy, struggling to be a good zombie. You can buy it over here

Skulls and Thread

Some new experiments in my Moleskine with needle and thread. I placed transparent paper over the bird skull, to make a distinction between all the thread.

I made a sketch of a bird skull a while back and a couple of days ago I thought it could use a bit more, so I continued the sketch in black thread, accompanied by overlapping triangles.

They lost their physical form and haunted the minds of men in their sleep and so it came to be that the great race of Maras became nothing more then a nightmare

I promised you I would post something on the journal of Samuel Blackburn soon, so here it is. Maras aren't creatures we actually get to meet in the journal , it's a background for Samuel's nightmares. More journal entries will follow, above is a photo of some layout ideas Brun and I came up with today. Brun posted an illustration as well, the illustration he posted is about a white lady that haunts the lake where her daughter drowned.

Another photo from my trip to Paris, this one was taken at Père Lachaise as well, with my Pentax on Kodak T-Max 400 ISO. I'm currently working on 'The Journal of Samuel Blackburn' and I'm really excited about posting parts of the story somewhere in the next couple of days. I'm giving my Lomography workshop at the museum on Friday, will post something on Roro about it afterwards. We're repeating the Lomo Workshop in the summer vacation as well and I'm adapting it for school trips to the museum. I'm currently developing a workshop about Polaroid for the museum, one for adults one for children from 3 to 5. Below is a short summary about the adult version of the workshop.

We're Going Wrong

Another photo from my trip to Paris, I took this picture around the evening, outside of Père Lachaise with my Pentax on Kodak T-Max 400 ISO film. If you're wondering about my camera, I got it from my dad about a year ago. He bought it when he was in the army in 1975 (I found the warranty, still in pristine state). It's a Asahi Pentax and I use a 50mm lens to take my photos, for black 'n' white photos I prefer to use Kodak's T-Max film and for colour I tend to lean towards Fuji, because of the insane colours you can get with their slide film.

Next week I'm giving a Lomography workshop at FoMu, we have 20 contestants, so fully booked in other words. Lomo gave us a bunch of cameras and film, so we're fully set, I'll post the details of the workshop on Roro.

I work as a guide at MoMu as well now, we just opened a new exhibition called Black: Masters of Black in Fashion & Costume, so I still have to write a review for that on Roro. Hopefully I'll post it sometime next week.

I took this photo when I was in Paris last week, a detail of one of the tombs at Père Lachaise cemetery. The photo was taken with my pentax on Kodak T-max 400 ISO. Other things I'm currently working on besides editing my photos is a short story called 'The Journal of Samuel Blackburn' it's a kind of mock journal set in the 19th century and filled with horror. The story is being written for Brun Croes's batchelor project.

Plenty of new sketches, I've been busy. New photos will have to wait, some of my film is almost full, but until it is I'll have to entertain you with another medium. These are 2 new sketchbook, the first one is the normal sized moleskine, the other one is an A4 sized Moleskine.

Something else I'm working on with Brun is a mock journal, filled with horror stories. Which is something different for me, because I don't usually write about horror, but I couldn't resist when I started looking up folklore and myths...

I took this photo while I was in Montmarte with a Diana Mini on Rollei 400. I'm really happy with the way my photos turned out, it's nice to experiment with different kinds of BW film, just to discover the subtle differences. I'm returning to Paris around spring, different season, different neighborhood, different photos, ...

I will post more photos, just wanted to get something out there. Enjoy the song, it's by a band called Death from the 70's. They were re-discovered and their LP came out this year, they never became big, because they refused to sell out.

So Much Light For Such A Tiny Hole...

It's been a while since my last update, I've been busy with work and writing and since I very seldom post any of my writing there was a lack in updates. To get back into visually creating stuff, I started out by just playing a bit with collage and ink. The result is a box about A5 in size in which I put my material for my job as a guide at the FoMu.

Some of the stuff inside the box, I use it to explain the workings and history of photography in my guiding.

A photo I took with a pinhole camera at the FoMu, it was my very first one and I'm happy with how it turned out. It's amazing how simple photography is in its basic form.

A preview for the Wizard of Oz project, this is a detail of a pair of jeans I'm working on for the scarecrow character.

Merry Christmas, I'll be busy cooking for my family, so not much time to create anything, hopefully I'll find a bit of time, but I doubt it.

Eternal is a series of graphic novels I’m working on. I’ve written the outlines for about 9 novels and now I’m focussing more on the actual writing part. I’ve also been working on the concept art, by collecting things that inspire me, sketching and taking photos… If I was able to explain Eternal in a couple of sentences, I would, but I can’t, too big of a story, too many storylines, …

But I can show you the concept art, some of these you’ve already seen, but I wanted to put everything in a single post. Just remember some of the photos in my sketchbook aren’t mine, they’re just there for inspiration.

Six characters from the novel, in the correct order are Lilith, Eve, Eden, Samael, Judah, Ariel, all written in hebrew. Calligraphy is kinda hard when you're not used to it, on the upside I know about half of the Hebrew alphabet by heart now.

Eternal: Character Design for Eve (WIP)

It’s been ages since my last update and even longer since I updated Roro. I was just more focussed on creating things, working on projects and enjoying the summer then on posting about it.

This post is about another one of my characters for my project called Eternal, the character I’m currently working on is Eve. She’s supposed to have this washed out look with hints of colour, so I’m still experimenting a lot with the right amount of colour and which colours. So don’t look at these photos as a finished product but as a work in progress.

I’m working with several media when it comes to developing these characters who or what they are and what they can do is something I’m not ready to tell you lot about, maybe in a couple of months…More about the several media, I will be making a painting of each of the characters, after I’ve figured out a definitive look for them. So I’ll be working on the characters through the medium of photography, painting, sketches and since they are part of the story, words.

This post is a collection of photos with vivid colours, heavy saturation and cross-processing. The above two pictures were taken with my Canon, the vivid colours in them were gained by tweaking them in Photoshop.

I just got my pictures back, the ones I took with my Pentax. I wanted to try something different so I shot the pictures on slide film and had them cross-processed. I don’t know why, but my scanner kind of fucked my colours up, they are supposed very saturated, but somehow my scanner drained some of that saturation out of them, tried to fix it a bit in Photoshop, still not the same though.

This picture was taken through a keyhole, they are kind of hellish to get a right focus on.

Avon

I did a photo shoot on Saturday, below are some of the results, using myself as a canvas I experimented with Chinese ink and make up. The idea for the shoot started out as a character development thing for Avon, a character in one of my stories. The picture below was sort of an accident, I got ink in my eye, it was great for my character development and okay for me, no damage done, didn’t even hurt…Don’t think I’ll try it again, though.

I started taking the pictures around 8PM, when the evening sun was burning through my windows. After that I took the make up further and ended up taking pictures and adjusting things until 11 or so…

It was actually a lot of fun working on Avon as a character in real life and I’ll probably take it further, really try to bring the character alive. If you’re wondering who or what Avon is and what she can do, I’m afraid you’re gonna have to wait…

I'm Putting a Bit of Me In Every Corner of My Room...

First of all let me tell you how incredibly happy I am that my record player is finally playing at full capacity. It’s bloody great to hear Jimi and to be able to fully experience the man’s insane guitar skills. I bought four new records: two Jimi Hendrix records, a Tom Waits record and a Beatles record, three of those you can see in the picture above. In the picture below you can see my record player and a Jimi record at work. I love having an old record player, each time I put a record on I feel like I’m listening so much more consciously to the music, I don’t know, just makes it more intense.

And now we come to the title of this blog post…What it comes down to is that I love collage technique and I love being surrounded by things that inspire me. I couple of months ago I started decorating one of my walls and my door, couldn’t get enough of it so I did one of my radiators as well. After a while I noticed that some of my pictures from the first wall were coming down, so I pulled everything down and started from scratch, It’s almost finished. It's a mix of my own work, pictures from magazines, my own pictures, postcards, ...

Another thing I’ve done is hanging several of my polaroids on a support beam that goes from one end of my room to the other.

First off, I have two new cameras, one is a Diana F+ and the other one is my dad's old Pentax. I'm excited to experiment with both, expect some results and the next couple of weeks.

Some experiments, I grabbed my camera while I was sorting through my dad's old stamps, the two below this one were shot through the glasses of my Ray Ban, I just love experimenting ...

And now on to the title of this post True Blood, I cut myself while on the roof, I wanted to to take some pictures with my Pentax, which ended in blood shed ...

While I was in the bathroom cleaning the cuts, I kept thinking wow I love the colour of the blood and the Betadine (no worries, most of the red stuff in the pics isn't blood). So I hopped over to my camera on one leg, not wanting to get blood on the floor and took some pictures.

I finished one of the hybrid paintings, it's acrylic on Arches 56 x 76 cm 300 g. I'm working on the male counterpart and I'll place the feathers in other places, like his chest, beard and arms, so it's more obvious that the woman isn't wearing a mask, but that the feathers are implants.

One of the projects I’m working on is about hybrid mixes between birds and humans. I focus on two aspects of this hybrid mix, one is beauty and the other one is functionality. For the beauty aspect, people would implant feathers into their skin, to enhance their features. The other aspect is about being able to fly and how the body would adapt.

Everything is still a work in progress, the Barbie doll is a prototype for the functionality aspect and I still need to design wings for her. The very washed out painting is one of three paintings that I’m making and they are the making of the functionality aspect. This is what I have so far, but I love this project, so expect a lot more soon.

My god, I cannot tell you how fuckin’ tedious it is to prime a Barbie doll, I don’t have a clue how many coats of gesso I’ve put on it. The good news however is that she no longer resembles a Barbie doll all that much.

Some pictures of a project for school called 'Mobile Unit'. I gave several people a bag filled with cogwheels (gearwheels) and asked them to make something with it, i took pictures from the process and the end result and turned them into polaroids. So this is what I have so far, but I'll probably work on it for another couple of weeks. And some experiments with ink, bister, water, ecoline, charcoal ...

Pins n Needles

The first one is gesso, wire and charcoal, it's 50 x 70 cm. It is about the pins and needles effect you get when you have a panic attack. The second work is three kinds of tape, charcoal, ink, ecoline, x-rays and bits of magazine and it's 70 x 100 cm. It's also part of the panic attack series, this one is about chaos.

The Blood is Love

The first work is about how blood changes when someone goes trough a panic attack, It's my third work in a series about panic attacks, I'll show the rest later. Sado The pictures are 13.5 x 20 cm and I printed them out on hahnemuhle. They play a part in a bigger piece I'm working on that's about-Masochism.

This one is a mix between gesso, x-ray's, acrylics

This is a painting of an open heart surgery, done in acrylics and gesso

These two are pills and pill strips

This one is a representation of red blood cells and blood, done in watercolors

The last two are the result of ripping apart latex gloves and sticking them together

All of the works were done on Hahnemuhle and are about 27 x 40 cm in size. We had to make drawings about something in our environment, I chose medical stuff and this is the result.

I tried to go for this washed out version, but still a bit too blue for me. I don't know when

I've been making booklets out of recycled paper, I tend to keep a lot of paper from old books, folder, things I like and such ... then I prepare them with gesso, so the text or the picture underneath will only have shine through and it makes the paper a bit stronger. So these little booklets are the result, I'll probably keep them for sketching (it's a nice feeling to make your own sketchbooks). And I printed my lino on a piece of cloth and taped it to a piece of cardboard, for another sketchbook, only this one will be slightly bigger and contain more pages.

I made a lino out of the painting I was making, the lino is A5. So the first one shows the lino and the study I made for it, second one is the lino up close, it took me about 3 hours to cut it out and i'll start making the prints tomorrow. Since I'm still experimenting with the right paper, ink, ... and such, I'm just gonna make 10 prints or so, see what people think ... I bought several kinds of paper and I decided on printing it on Hahnemühle 200g and Zerkall 150 g. The other kinds I bought were Arches 300g (really beautiful paper) and Simili Japon 225g and I'm gonna keep them for painting. The prints will be for sale as soon as i've decided on the right kind of paper and everything ...

So the concept is still the same self portrait inspired by clockwork orange

I started this painting 3 weeks ago in acrylic, I left it alone for a while and then I decided that I wanted to paint it in oils, so today i did. So the first two are in acrylic and the last two is the same painting in oils. It's 50 x 70 on wood panel

I've been experimenting with make-up, trying to make interesting characters and then photographing them. So I drew fake lashes and tried to get the clockwork orange stare down. The picture comes pretty close to the real thing. This painting is a study I made in a moleskine, I'm planning to paint it on a bigger canvas, but make it a lot more clockwork orange like.

Fairy Tale

We had to make a magazine for school about a person in our class. I didn't use any typography, because I wanted the pictures to tell the story. It's a fairy tale about a girl, looking in the woods for something. She sees a gnome and then another one and startles. Suddenly there's a flash and she starts to shrink, until she's not much taller then the gnomes. She asks the gnome if there's a way to get tall again. He tells her that she needs to find a necklace, but the queens has hidden it somewhere in the woods. In their search for the necklace, they come across a cat, who tries to catch them. After a while they spot the necklace and as the girl gets closer and closer, the necklace starts to glow and she starts to grow until she is back to her normal size again.

I wanted to do something with The Wizard of Oz, so I focused on one character, the tin man.

I decided to cut the heart out in lino, which took an incredible amount of time to do, then I made a print and scanned it. I made several versions, one in grey, one in red, one with different text, ...
